სოციოლოგიის ერთ–ერთი დარგი. შეისწავლის მასობრივი კომუნიკაციის საშუალებების ფუნქციონირებისა და განვითარების პროცესებს, აგრეთვე მათ სოციალურ განპირობებულობასა და ზემოქმედების შედეგებს. ინფორმაციის სისტემატური გავრცელების პროცესი ბევრი სხვადასხვა სამეცნიერო სფეროს სპეციალისტს აინტერესებდა, რამაც მასმედიის პრობლემატიკისადმი თეორიულ მიდგომათა მრავალფეროვნება განაპირობა. წამყვანია 3 ძირითადი მიდგომა: 1) სოციალურ–ფსიქოლოგიური, რომელიც ყურადღებას ამახვილებს. მასობრივი კომუნიკაციის პროცესებსა და ზემოქმედებაზე; 2) მეორე მიდგომამ ცვლილებები შეიტანა თეორიულ ორიენტაციაში (განსაკუთრებით, სტრუქტურული ფუნქციონალიზმის გავლენით) და აქტუალური გახდა მასობრივი კომუნიკაციის ინსტიტუტებისა და მათი სოციალური კონტექსტის საკითხი; 3) XX ს–ის 60–იან წლებში სტრუქტურალიზმის გავლენით ჩამოყალიბებულმა მესამე მიდგომამ შესწავლის საგნად აქცია მასობრივი ინფორმაციის საშუალებებით გადაცემული შეტყობინებები და მნიშვნელობები. შესაბამისად, მასმედიის განვითარების სხვადასხვა ეტაპზე შესწავლის ობიექტებიც განსხვავდებოდა: XX ს–ის 30–40–იან წლებში ეფექტური პროპაგანდისტული ზემოქმდების პირობებისა და შინაარსის შესწავლაში დიდი წვლილი შეიტანა ამერიკულმა სკოლამ (ლასუელი, ჰოვლანდი), რომელმაც ლასუელის ცნობილი ფორმულით – „ვინ აცნობებს, რას აცნობებს, რომელი არხებით, ვის და რა ეფექტით“ – გამოხატა მ. ს–ის ძირითადი პრინციპი. ამავე პერიოდში ჩამოყალიბდა კვლევათა მეთოდიკური არსენალი: მასობრივი შერჩევითი გამოკითხვა და აუდიტორიის საპანელო კვლევა (ლაზარსფელდი), კონტენტ–ანალიზი (ლასუელი, ბერელსონი), ექსპერიმენტები (ლევინი და ჰოვლანდი). მოგვიანებით, დამოკიდებულებების თეორიაზე დაყრდნობით, ჩამოყალიბდა მასობრივი კომუნიკაციის ეფექტურობის გამაშუალებელი კონცეფცია (კლაპერი) და ორსაფეხურიანი კომუნიკაციის თეორია, რაც გულისხმობს, რომ იდეები (ინფორმაცია) ხშირად ვრცელდება მ. ს–ის საშუალებიდან „საზოგადოებრივი აზრის ლიდერებამდე“, ხოლო მათგან – სხვა, ნაკლებად აქტიურ მიმდევრებამდე – რეციპიენტებამდე. ჩვეულებრივ შეისწავლიან: ა) კომუნიკატორის, აუდიტორიის, შეტყობინების შინაარსისა და მასობრივი ინფორმაციის აღქმის პრობლემებს; ბ) მასობრივი ინფორმაციის საშუალებათა (ბეჭდვითი, რადიო, ტელევიზია, კინო, რეკლამა და სხვ.) თავისებურებებს; გ) მასობრივი ინფორმაციის სისტემის ფუნქციონირების კანონზომიერებებს. მ. ს–ის ძირითადი თეორიული პრობლემაა მიმართებების გააზრება მასმედიასა და საზოგადოებას შორის, აგრეთვე, მასობრივი ინფორმაციის საშუალებათა როლი კულტურის შექმნაში და სხვ.
