სტატისტიკურ ჰიპოთეზათა შემოწმება ეფუძნება შერჩევის მონაცემებს, ამიტომ საჭიროა ამ მონაცემების შესაგროვებლად ისეთი სტატისტიკის შემოღება, რომელიც საშუალებას მოგვცემს უარვყოთ ან არ უარვყოთ ნულოვანი ჰიპოთეზა გარკვეული მნიშვნელოვნების დონით. ასეთ სტატისტიკას კრიტერიუმის სტატისტიკა ეწოდება. შერჩევის მონაცემებზე აგებენ ისეთ  ფუნქციას, რომლის განაწილებაც (მაგალითად, ეს შეიძლება იყოს ნორმალური განაწილება) ცნობილია და რომელიც გვაძლევს დაკვირვებულ და ჰიპოთეტურ მნიშვნელობებს შორის განსხვავების საზომს.

მაგალითი: გავრცელებულია აზრი, რომ მამაკაცები უფრო მკაცრად ისჯებიან ერთნაირი სახის ნაკლებად მნიშვნელოვანი დანაშაულისათვის, ვიდრე ქალები. შეგროვილი იყო მონაცემები 40 ქალისა და 49 კაცის პატიმრობის ვადებზე (დღეები).

ჩამოვაყალიბოთ ნულოვანი და ალტერნატიული ჰიპოთეზები.

H0: სასჯელის ვადა არაა დამოკიდებული სქესზე, μ1=μ2;

H1: სასჯელის ვადა დამოკიდებულია სქესზე, μ1≠μ2;

μ1=μ2 ნიშნავს, რომ კაცების და ქალების პოპულაციებისათვის სასჯელის საშუალო ხანგრძლივობა ტოლია.

თუ ორივე შერჩევის მოცულობა ტოლია ან მეტია 30 - ზე კრიტერიუმის სტატისტიკას აქვს სახე:

Z=X1-X2-(μ2-μ2)S12n1+S22n2≅N(0,1).

 

ამ სტატისტიკას აქვს სტანდარტული ნორმალური განაწილება და ნულოვანი ჰიპოთეზის უარყოფის არის აგება ხდება სტანდარტული ნორმალური განაწილების ცხრილის საშუალებით.
