სოციალურ თეორიაში გენდერული ჩაგვრის, ანუ მამაკაცთა დომინაციისა და ქალთა სუბორდინაციის უსამართლობის პრობლემის წინ წამოწევა ფემინისტთა უმნიშვნელოვანესი დამსახურებაა. ფემინისტური იდეოლოგიის დაბადებამდე გენდერის ნიშნით დომინაცია მისაღებად იყო მიჩნეული.

ფემინიზმის მეორე ტალღის მიერ კაცების ქალებზე დომინაციის უნივერსალურობისა და პატრიარქალური ჩაგვრის საფუძვლად მდებარე სისტემად წარმოჩენის მცდელობა მოგვიანებით შავკანიანმა ფემინისტებმა (ანჯელა დევისმა, ბელ ჰუკსმა) გააკრიტიკეს, რადგან ასეთი მიდგომა უყურადღებოდ ტოვებს ჩაგვრის კომპლექსურ ბუნებას და, სქესთან ერთად,  რასის, სოციალური კლასის, ეთნიკური წარმოშობის, სექსუალობისა თუ სხვა სოციალური მახასიათებლების როლს სოციალურ იერარქიებში. შავკანიან ფემინისტთა კრიტიკა თვით ქალთა ჯგუფებს შორის დომინაციისა და სუბორდინაციის არსებობაზე ამახვილებდა ყურადღებას. შავკანიან ფემინისტთა მტკიცებით, დომინაცია და სუბორდინაცია არა იზოლირებულად, არამედ ინტერსექციონალურად  უნდა განვიხილოთ.
