ტერმინს იყენებენ მდიდარი (სიუხვის) საზოგადოების (affluent society) აღსანიშნავად. იგი დამკვიდრდა XX ს–ის 50–60–იან წლებში ამ პერიოდის ბრიტანული და ამერიკული საზოგადოებების აღსაწერად. ამ ტერმინით აღწერდნენ 50–იანი წლების ინგლისს, სადაც ცხოვრების დონის ამაღლებას მოჰყვა ღრმა ცვლილებები სოციალურ ურთიერთობებში და მუშათა კლასის მიერ ლეიბორისტთა ტრადიციული მხარდაჭერის შესუსტება; აგრეთვე XX ს–ის 50–იანი წლების ბოლო პერიოდის ამერიკულ საზოგადოებას, როცა საბაზისო ეკონომიკური დეფიციტი კი დამარცხდა, მაგრამ ,,ადამიანის სიმდიდრესთან“ თანაარსებობდა საყოველთაო მიშვებულობაც (მაგალითად, აწარმოებდნენ ავტომობილებს, მაგრამ არ ცდილობდნენ გზების გაუმჯობესებასა და გარემოს მოვლას, არ ზრუნავდნენ დაზარალებულ ან არასაკმარისად უზრუნველყოფილ პირებზე და სხვა.).
